The brief for this house was to reconfigure and extend the existing house, within the maximum permitted development rights uneer planning pegislation at that time. This allowed us to construct a two storey addition to the rear, and a room in the loft, providing a four storey dwelling in which two separate spaces were provided – the main house, and a self contained apartment for a special needs occupant at ground level. The brief required a carefully considered relationship between the main house and the semi-independent apartment to ensure adequate visual connection whilst retaining privacy. This was achieved through a series of portholes from one space to the other and from inside to outside.
