A-ZERO was shortlisted for competition to design a new city centre for Kiruna, north Sweden, together with Swedish Architects Tham & Videgård Arkitekter and London based Territorial Agency. Kiruna is a unique city which has evolved since the first iron ore deposits in the area began to be exploited a hundred years ago. The underground extraction of iron ore has resulted in dramatic subsidence which, sooner or later, will render a large part of Kiruna’s existing urban settlement uninhabitable. The competition was to imagine how the city would be relocated over a period of twenty years to a new site away from the mine and the threat of subsidence. The existing Kiruna city centre including the Town Hall, the Kiruna Church and other historical monuments as well as housing for four thousand persons is going to be moved to or replaced within the new site.
